Family-Friendly Farms for a Lively Outdoor Picnic

For city people, meeting farm animals outside illustrated children’s books or TV shows rarely happens. As such, here are three family-friendly farms in Korea, where children and adults can experience interacting with live animals.

Ultimate Petting Zoo Experience: Anseong Farmland

Anseong Farmland, where you can meet 25 kinds of animals such as cattle, sheep, geese, pigs, and donkeys, is located over a vast field of 1,280,000 m2. It offers various animal-friendly activities with the theme of “enjoyable experience with animals,” on or at its ranches, horse race tracks, farm schools, and dairy farming center. The farm is also popular among young children because of the different rides and playground structures it offers. In addition, fun activities take place regularly on the outdoor stage and in the Farm Animal Academy. The Lamb Shearing Village frequently hosts farm animal talent contests, herding shows, and shearing shows. However, dog shows featuring talented puppies are by far the most popular. Moreover, the petting zoo and the birds feeding compound allow visitors to feed animals on site. The flower-filled trails are especially popular among lovers enjoying leisurely strolls. Canola and cosmos blossoms fill up the vast field every spring and fall, respectively. The sight is so beautiful that it can enchant you into taking many pictures. You should try pedaling six-person bicycles to enjoy your tour better.

Just Like Old McDonald’s Farm: Sangha Farm, Gochang

Sangha Farm is an agriculture-themed park in Gochang where children can frolic in nature, interact with farm animals, and harvest fresh and healthy produce, which is what the widely sung-about “Old McDonald’s farm” would look like if it were real. Here, you can run around on the grassy field, feed sheep, and join a cooking class to make your own sausages. “Build, Play, and Eat” is the motto of Sangha Farm, making food a major attraction here. Children love the cooking classes, where they can make sausages and animal-shakes cookies using eco-friendly ingredients. In addition, feeding little sheep and pigs and giving calves milk will surely make unforgettable memories for all kids. The farm tour program also includes a guided tour of the cheese and organic milk production facilities on site.

Pet and Play: Alpaca World, Hongcheon

Alpacas are the heifers you would least expect to find on the foot of a mountain in Gangwon-do, Korea. Alpaca World is a rare place where visitors can pet and play with different exotic animals, including alpaca, ponies, milk goats, white deer, rabbits, and cockatiels. Most importantly, these animals roam freely around instead of being locked up in cages. Alpacas are naturally the most popular, drawing in visitor after visitor with their big, emotional eyes, long eyelashes, and soft hair.
To travel this vast farm sprawling over some 330,000 m2 most efficiently, you should take an electric shuttle to the plane above the outdoor stage and make your way slowly downhill. The animal show where members of the audience can interact with alpaca, parrots, and dogs takes place once every day during the week and twice a day on the weekends and public holidays. Moreover, the Forest Café neighboring a free-range alpaca ranch is the highlight of the tour. You can pet these gentle and kind animals and take selfies with them. You can also visit the Rabbit Country, the Pony Country, and the Birds Garden to feed animals.
