Enjoying Korean Wines on the Countryside:
Touring Yeongdong Wineries

Yeongdong-gun, a small town in Chungcheongbuk-do, accounts for 13 percent of all grapes grown in South Korea. Its climate, with big differences in day and night temperatures and suitable precipitation, coupled with the right kind of soil, makes Yeongdong-gun a perfect environment for grape farming and wine-making. There are nearly 40 wineries as well as Yeongdong Wine Tunnel you can tour in the region.

Discovering the Process of Wine-Making at Yeongdong-gun: Yeongdong Wine Tunnel

The tunnel, extending for 420 meters, exhibits a wide range of artifacts and content on grape farming and wines. The Vineyard Journey section at the beginning of the tunnel introduces renowned wineries and wine-making techniques from around the world. It shows that barren soil that loses moisture easily is perfect for growing grapes. The best wines come from climates where only few grapes can be grown due to the barrenness of the land. The 90 or so caves connected to the tunnel served as magazines during the Japanese occupation of Korea, but are now used as places where wines are matured. Other features include the Fantasy Tunnel, providing panoramic video on multiple surfaces, and the Wine Tasting Center offering tastes of Yeongdong’s various wines.

Taste Korean Rose and Ice Wines: Doranwon Château Miso

Doranwon rose to fame when it became the first winery in Yeongdong-gun to produce rose and ice wines. The winery even won the Grand Prizes at the Korean Wine and Liqueur Championships in 2013 and 2018. The winery’s owner got the inspiration to produce his own ice wine from sikhye, the Korean traditional sweet rice drink, with a thin film of ice formed on it. Sikhye is made by mixing rice with barley malt and sugar and letting it ferment to reach the perfect sweetness. Doranwon’s ice wines went on to captivate an international audience by winning the Gold Prize at the Asian Wine Trophies. Château Miso offers chances to make wine-based cocktails and unique wine glasses for oneself.

When Wine Meets Art: Sanmac Winery

The winery’s owner, born and raised in Seoul, moved to Yeongdong to pursue his artistic dreams. He began to grow grapes on the vineyard next to his studio, and came to discover and love the world of wine-making. Sanmac’s signature product is Hwamong, made entirely with Campbell early. The winery also provides a variety of activities for visitors, including craft workshops on making fans and key rings, and winery and gallery tours marked, at the end, by a party. You can even draw on the fan you make with a Sanmac-produced wine.
