Recommended Outing Destination:
Juknokwon and Juknimwon in Damyang

If you ever had a chance to trek through a well-known mountain in Korea, you probably have felt a noticeable change in your mood and condition, being freed completely from headaches and fatigue. That is the effect of the green shower full of phytoncides, which is naturally emitted by the lush woods. If you do not fancy climbing high mountains but still want to enjoy the reinvigorating green shower, we recommend that you take a trip to one of the famed bamboo gardens in Korea.

Juknokwon Bamboo Garden, Damyang

Damyang, a pastoral town in Jeollanam-do in the southern part of Korea, is the largest habitat of bamboo trees in the country, accounting for some 35 percent of all bamboo forests found in the nation. There are multiple bamboo forests in Damyang, but the most famous one is Juknokwon. This major bamboo garden offers a chance to take a refreshing green shower, full of the healthy negative ions emitted by the trees and the gentle rays of golden sunlight.

Juknokwon features a walking trail through the bamboo forest, extending for a total of 2.4 kilometers. The trail is divided into eight themed sections, including the Good Luck Trail, the Friendship Trail, and the Scholar’s Trail. Take the stone staircase at the entrance of Juknokwon to warm up your body. Embrace the cool breeze blowing through the bamboo trees. You will instantly feel as if you had been transported into some otherworldly place.

* Eight sections of the walking trail: Good Luck Trail (460 meters, 14 minutes); Friendship Trail (150 meters, 4 minutes); Shortcut (100 meters, 2 minutes); Nostalgic Shortcut (210 meters, 5 minutes); Eternal Love Trail (630 meters, 20 minutes); Hilly Road to Seonginsan Mountain (150 meters, 3 minutes; 70 meters, 1 minute; 200 meters, 5 minutes); Philosopher’s Trail (360 meters, 9 minutes); Scholar’s Trail (370 meters, 10 minutes); and One-Night-Two-Days Trail (435 meters, 13 minutes).

Juknokwon also includes the Siga Culture Village, showcasing the traditional style of housing and wooden pavilions in Damyang. Myeonyangjeong Wooden Pavilion is the epitome of wooden pavilion architecture in Damyang. Usongdang offers pansori (traditional vocal art) classes, while the Jukno Powdered Green Tea Research Center offers visitors a chance to taste the Jukno green tea blend. Jukno tea is made with wild tea leaves grown on dewdrops falling from nearby bamboo trees.

The Damyang Bamboo Festival will be held at Juknokwon from May 2 to 7 this year. The festival will feature the planting of bamboo trees, bamboo-related crafts, and traces of the seonbi (learned nobility) culture under the theme of “Green Bamboo Forests, Breathing Natural Environments.” The festival’s program will also feature performances of traditional arts, making bamboo liquors, and a flea market. Juknimwon (restaurant)

If you enjoyed your time in the bamboo forest at Juknokwon, you should also taste the famed juktongbap, which is rice steamed in bamboo cylinders and served with various side dishes. The most popular item on the menu at Juknimwon is the table d’hote special named Daetongnyongjjim. Ten or so ingredients are placed side by side on a narrow and lengthy bamboo tray (six-meter long) and slowly cooked inside a brazier for an hour or so. The dish taken out of the brazier and placed on the table is not only delicious, but also beautiful to look at. Juknimwon is also surrounded on all sides by a green bamboo forest.
* If you want to try Daetongnyongjjim, you must make a reservation one day before.
