Is Manicure Healthy for You?

As that big rhinestone attached to the tip of your fingernail shines, everyone turns around to look at it. Manicure today is no longer about polishing your nails with different colors. Rather, it has evolved into an art, making use of diverse materials ranging from sparkling stones to cartoon characters. Now that almost all women get manicures on a regular basis, it is time to stop and ask whether all this is really good for our health.

The glamour of manicures hides the condition of the nails easily. Fingernails are where the greatest quantity of germs is found on the hands. Germs found underneath the fingernails include pneumococci, urinary tract pathogens, yeast, and staphylococci. No matter how thoroughly and often we wash our hands, it is impossible to get all the germs out from under our fingernails. As we neglect to dry our hands and fingertips fully after washing them, germs multiply even more. Growing our fingernails long, often in preparation for manicures, is an invitation to microbial proliferation.
Fingernails are part of the skin. Frequent manicures exert stimulation on this part of the skin. Gel-type nail polishes are popular today because they do not easily flake off nails. These polishes can be hardened only under ultraviolet (UV) rays. Repeated exposure to UV rays, however, increases the risk of a malignant type of skin cancer known as melanoma. Acetone, which is used to remove non–gel-type nail polishes, is also a threat to health. Repeated and excessive stimulation from acetone-containing nail polish removers is a leading cause of onycholysis, which refers to the loosening or separation of nails as a result of dehydration. Onycholysis is an SOS sign from our nails crying for help.

There are ways to ensure beauty and health together. First, go for polishes and other manicure products that are made from healthy ingredients. While there are no 100% organic nail polishes or removers thus far, you can always choose milder over stronger ones. Before applying colorful nail polishes, don’t forget to apply a base coat. A base coat contains less harmful chemicals, like formaldehydes, and is an unpigmented shield for nails. It prevents the chemical coloring agents of nail polishes from infiltrating nails.

Limit your manicures to twice a month or less. If you received a manicure, make sure you remove it after a week so that your fingernails can breathe again. After removing nail polishes and the like, protect your nails with nail hardeners or treatment products and massage them gently. The habit of applying a hand cream to the tips of fingernails can also help maintain the natural oil-water balance in them. Be more careful when you remove gel-type nail polishes or artificial nails that have been glued to your natural nails. Applying excessive force in these processes can easily separate and damage your nails. Either have these done by a professional or wait for the gel polishes to melt by soaking your nails in nail removers.
Removing cuticles may seem necessary for beauty, but is not advised for health. Cuticles are essential props for protecting the health of nails. If they seem untidy, you should wet them in oil and push them gently away from your nails instead of cutting them away.
